Voluntarily Registered Family Day Home – is a form of regulation offered to family day homes that are not required by law to be licensed. It is available to child care providers who care for fewer than six children in their homes. Voluntary registration is not available where a local ordinance regulates unlicensed providers, i.e., Alexandria, Arlington, and Fairfax.

How Does Registration Work?
The Virginia Department of Social Services has authorized ChildSavers to administer the program. You pay ChildSavers a $50 fee to register for two years.
A background check (including a criminal record check and a search of the Central Registry for any founded complaint of child abuse or neglect) and a tuberculosis screening are required. These expenses are business-related and tax-deductible.
ChildSavers will give you an application packet at orientation. You can then complete a self-assessment of the program requirements using the health and safety checklist. To preview the health and safety checklist, please click the following link:

When you are confident that you meet the requirements, you invite ChildSavers to visit your home to confirm that you’ve taken steps to protect the children in your care.
You may then tell parents that an objective agency representative has visited your home. This will assure parents that your home has been observed and that basic safeguards are in place to protect their children.
